The story behind the move of the Alummoottil Tharavad around the year 1700 from Kulasekharapuram to Muttom is a legend in this area. Two brothers of the Tharavad had gone to Mavelikkara to learn some new techniques of kalaripayattu (traditional sword fight) in the Kalari (school for learning sword fight) owned by a related family Lekshana.

Just like the Alummoottil family members were called as ‘Channar’, the members of Lekshana family were called ‘Panicker’at that time. The Lekshana Panickers were very good at kalaripayattu and were appointed as trainers for the army of Maadathumkoor kingdom (present Mavelikkara). This Maadathumkoor king was very close to Travancore king, the archenemy of Kayamkulm king. So, when the Kayamkulam king heard about this visit and training of the two brothers at the Lekshana kalary in his enemy kingdom, he became very angry and decided to summon them before him.
