It may have been Mathevan Channar I who was instrumental in buying the ‘puthen purackal’ property and constructing the first ‘nalu kettu’ at the present site of Alummoottil Tharavad. It was around 1814 that this property was acquired and a ‘nalu kettu’ was constructed and the residence moved from the present temple compound at Thekkadathu. An ‘ettu kettu’, purchased from Nellimoottil Christian family by the Karanavar Valiakunju Sankaran Channar replaced the puthen purakkal ‘naalu kettu’ in 1870 which was moved to the Thoppil property. This ‘nalu kettu’ is still intact at the Thoppil property.

Mathevan Channar I was very hard working and devoted to the well being of the Tharavad. Legend has it that one fine morning, he was spreading the newly harvested paddy in a big mat called ‘chikku pa’ and suddenly there appeared a very beautiful lady in front of him. He was surprised by her presence but he soon regained his senses and welcomed her in the most respectable way. He requested her to sit down by spreading the traditional red carpets such as ‘pulpa’ and ‘mettha pa’.
