Shankaran Thampi, the karanavar (chieftain) of his family in the film “Manichitrathazhu,” is a 100% fictional character shrouded in power and obsession. It is widely believed that he was inspired by Alummoottil® Kochu Kunju Channar, a notable figure from early 20th century Kerala known for his larger-than-life presence and influential role in his community.
Despite these speculations, there is no official confirmation or denial from Sree Madhu Muttom, the screenplay writer of “Manichitrathazhu,” regarding this inspiration.
In the film’s narrative, Shankaran Thampi’s obsession with Nagavalli ultimately leads to his demise at her hands, adding a layer of tragedy and retribution to the story. In Manichitrathazhu, he finds Nagavalli with her lover Ramanathan, and kills her in rage.
